Rural Broadband - Ed Vaizey hears our concerns…
As Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt defended his position to the Leverson Enquiry in the House of Commons, next door I briefed our MP’s, Neil Parish and Hugo Swire, prior to a meeting with Broadband Minister, Ed Vaizey. We discussed concerns for the economic future of our area should we be ‘cut adrift’ from the prosperity associated with a Superfast Broadband future, due to the relatively remote rural nature of Uplyme, the rest of Trinity, East Devon and Lyme Regis.
Ed confirmed that his prime target remains the deployment of Superfast (>24Mb) broadband to 90% of premises by 2015. The Devon and Somerset target is 85% rather than 90%. This means that 135,000 premises in Devon & Somerset will not receive Superfast Broadband by 2015. This is the equivalent of a city twice the size of Exeter, or twenty-five times the size of Axminster!
"Our chance to get better connected in Trinity - Closes soon!
Please 'tweet', 'retweet', Facebook, call all friends and neighbours!
Local Councils are working in partnership to bring faster broadband to Uplyme, Combpyne-Rousdon and Axmouth.
The aim is to have:
Improved broadband (>2mbps) to every business and community across Devon and Somerset by 2015
Superfast broadband (>24mbps) to at least 85% of the area by 2015, with 100% by 2020
Faster broadband supports our businesses to be more competitive and helps communities’ access services, saving them money, information and learning opportunities.
This is our one big opportunity to shape the future of digital services in Trinity and ensure the economic prosperity of our rural areas, so it’s vital we all get involved now to help us get Trinity connected and up to speed.
We need to act now...!
The next step is to secure investment from the private sector to install the broadband in Trinity.

Rural Broadband - BBC Radio Devon - 2nd Feb
Did a short interview with BBC Radio Devon this morning as Chair of the Trinity Broadband Group - Not the finest moment, the schedule changed mid flow and the flavour of the story perhaps not as I had intended.
However, detailed are notes of my comments on the announcement this morning of the next stage in the implementation of the works associated with the BDUK funding of Rural Broadband in Devon and Somerset.
The upshot is that there are 'mixed messages', on one hand the wish to secure the best commercial solution, on the other to provide services to the rural communities.
By definition these communities, like Combpyne-Rousdon, are not commercially attractive to the private sector, which I understood was actually the reason for the BDUK funding in the first place (see BDUK Website and Connection Devon and Somerset Website ). but that was were we came in almost two years ago.
The end result is apparently simple although Keri Denton, in charge of the project for Devon County Council, on the same radio piece has insisted that the Rural Prices and Speeds will be the same as our urban equivalents.
I may be a bit simple, but I don't know how this can be achieved when the 'hard to reach' 15% are not scheduled to receive Superfast Broadband, rather a minimum of 2Mb until after 2015 at the earliest and the expensive satellite is seen as an option in terms of speed and costs to optical fibre...I hope I am wrong....but the jury is out!

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser.
The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
